The early 90s were the time when Gulshan Kumar and his T-Series ruled the roost. There used to be some very tackily made movies starring newbies but with some great music. You cringe when you see the video today, but just listen to the music and you know what i mean.

Ugly aur Pagli

Someone kick Anu Malik’s backside and let him know that his voice is as lousy as Himesh ‘nasal’ Reshammiya. Both are equally grating and hard on the ears. Like the nasal man, Anu Malik insists on singing all the songs. Moron. He really screws up some of the best songs in the album with his lousy voice.
Still, i presume it would be great watching Ranvir Shorey matching his wits with Her Highness, The Bombshell aka Mallika Sherawat. Though there are rumors that the movie is a remake of a korean hit “My Sassy Girl”. The songs “Kar le gunaah” and “Talli” are pretty good. But the best in the album is “Ye Nazar” by Sunidhi Chauhan and Shaan. Nice peppy numbers in the album.
My rating *** (3/5)
Singh is King

The album has a Snoop Dogg number where the Doggie starts off the song with a few rap lines where he mentions Punjab as PORNjab
But the album has some real chartbusters in it. Quite a lot of songs in it is sure to burn up the floors in the pubs and discos across the country.
The Daler Mehandi song ‘Bhootni Ke’ is pretty groovy and sure to keep the feet moving. The album has an overdose of punjabi lyrics and they simply go over my head. But the best in the album has to be the Mika, Hard Kaur title song. When you have the lyrics that go like this
Ek colour ke terah patte, lekin sab mein bas ek thing
Ace bhi hum hai, base bhi hum hain
aur jigar mein hain daring
hum hum kare dil ki jo marzi
karte karte bas had kar di
dil agar sachha ho rab sab karde setting
Singh is King, Singh is King, Singh is King
The album and the movie has ‘blockbuster’ written in bold all over.
My rating **** (4/5)

So, the D-day is here. Will it be Imraan or Harman? Would be too busy this weekend or else would have wanted to catch Jaane Tu. Or maybe i will watch it on my India trip. The songs of Jaane Tu are far better than Love Story 2050. Bollywood doesnt have a great history when it comes to either sci-fi or even movies loaded with special effects. So, i do believe that Love Story is on a sticky wicket here. Also Harman Harry Baweja is a past master of B-grade movies. Abbas Tyrewala, the director of Jaane Tu is a newbie. He’s a storywriter turned director. He’s on an equally weak wicket.

Schools and colleges across the country have opened and youngsters would be thronging at the theatres to catch both of them. Am sure the girls would be rooting for the chocolate faced Imraan. Though i do find Harman to be a better actor going by the promos.

But one thing is for sure. Both movies are going to open big. What would work in favour of Jaane Tu is its small budget. And if Love Story doesn’t have a great opening and if the reviews come out bad, then Harry Baweja ka baand baj jayegaa.
And then, the baap of all movies is releasing on 17th July. The bus stops in Singapore were plastered this morning with the poster of “The Dark Knight”. Man, it just blew my mind. Am a big Batman fan. And i thought Batman Begins was probably the best in its class. This is another movie i can hopefully catch in India.

There’s something about this guy’s singing that gets me hooked. There are hardly any songs that he has sung that i have not liked. Private albums, film songs, you name it, he’s got the range to carry it off pretty well.

Years ago, fresh from the success of the Satya and Company, Ram Gopal Varma planned to make a huge movie based on International terrorism. He planned to get actors from Hollywood to star in it. There was quite a buzz around the movie then. The whole thing died out after some time. They say, the budget was too huge for anyone to back the project.

Later this year, Ramu’s new movie Contract is releasing. The first teaser of the movie is out. All the actors are relative newcomers. Look at the promo and one has the feeling that Contract has an uncanny resemblance to his ambitious project, EK.
