Finally got time to change the look of the blog. Its been some time since i have been wanting to change the theme. While going through Matt Mullenweg’s website, found this colourful theme on his blog. Btw, who is Matt Mullenweg? He is the founder / developer of WordPress; the open source blog publishing software that powers this and millions of blogs & websites the world over.

Matt, whose blog is http://ma.tt (can you have a web address cooler than that?) founded the company Automattic which came out with products like Gravatar, Akismet (the spam catching software), WordPress etc. Visit Matt’s website for more information about technology and to read about himself and his interests in photography.

Managed to find all the previous codes of the Marriage ticker, World Community Grid etc. Also feel that the Equity portfolio and Books Read widgets look much better on this theme than the previous ones. Not only that, the comments section on all the other pages of this blog which mysteriously went missing in the previous themes have re-appeared with this theme

The 16th Asian Games are to begin today at Guangzhou in China. Unlike all the mess associated with the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October, the Chinese got all the infrastructure ready (along with the stadiums) months in advance. Now, that is what is called an awesome planning and execution. Am sure the Chinese would put up an even better display than the mind blowing performance they put up during the Olympics in Beijing in 2008. The opening and closing ceremony would be something to watch out for.

The opening ceremony would be at 2000 hrs Singapore time (+8 hrs GMT). Expecting the Indian team to repeat the performance of the Commonwealth Games would be simply too much. Even though the Aussies, English and Canadian teams were around in the Commonwealth Games, the Chinese, Japanese and Koreans are different cup of tea.

China ended with 166 golds in the previous Asian Games at Doha. They would be certainly gunning for 200 in front of their home crowd. Also the Chinese are fielding the biggest contingent ever, a younger team which will be put to test before the 2012 London Olympics where they are poised to top the medals tally again.

Also India take on New Zealand at Hyderabad, India for the 2nd test match. Wish i was back home, and i would have gone to the stadium to see Sachin, Laxman, Dravid etc play for probably the last time in Hyderabad. The Uppal stadium is just a few kilometers from my home and would have been fun with friends and family.

Anyways, here is wishing the best to both the Indian cricket team and the Indian contingent at the Asian Games. India won 10 golds, 17 silver and 26 bronze at the Doha games. Here’s wishing they improve the performance by at least 50% this time.

The wait is over. The complaints built up (courtesy our incompetent media). A few players stayed away. When the players actually landed, they were astonished at the amount of misinformation and lies told to them by their own media back home. Which was partly or fully supplied to them by our own homegrown media.

Well, ignore the naysayers. No matter what we say or do, the first thing the western media likes to portray when it comes to India is a cow standing in the middle of the road. What they cant seem to understand is how inspite of being the so-called beacons of democracy themselves, the cows of India have so much rights on walking on the roads of India.

Let’s face it. Poverty sells. Else the movies of Satyajit Rays and Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s of India wouldn’t be patronised whole-heartedly by the western media / public when they are themselves consigned to the garbage by the Indian public (the world’s biggest patrons). Of course its not easy for some of the snooty public / media in the western world to understand why and how the games could be awarded to a developing nation. The same happened with the Australia and English cricket teams. Today they see that their traditional source of power in cricket has been usurped by the BCCI. Its not easy to accept the truth that you are not longer relevant in the grander scheme of things. Wiser people accept the truth and mould themselves accordingly to the changing situation. Fools are buried in the shifting sands of time screaming and kicking.

The collapsed rainbow bridge is up; courtesy the Indian Army which put it up in 5 days flat. Eventhough, its a bailey bridge, it still does its job of standing up when people walk over it. The stadiums are ready, the games village has been praised by officials and players from all across the world. The food has been simply divine (according to the players), there are regular cultural programs and the players themselves are actively participating in them.

Lets admit it, the city of Delhi and its citizens are the biggest benificiaries of the games. A new world class metro, many flyovers, bridges, roads, parks, traffic lights; in short great infrastructure for Delhiites.

Of course there will be detractors who will complain of child labour being used for the construction of venues (What else will the child do sitting around when their parents are working at the site? They will also contribute and earn some money…so what’s wrong with it?). Shanties and slums being demolished (they were all illegaly occupying the government land and they were demolished. Is that wrong? Why don’t those bleeding heart liberals take each of the families affected by the demolition and give them shelter in their own homes?).

So ignore all the crappy complaints, rest and relax as the biggest ever carnival on the land of India begins tonight. The opening ceremony of the 19th Commonwealth Games gets underway at 1900 hrs IST. Watch it on TV or at the stadium (if you are lucky to get the tickets). As for all the ones who complain of human rights abuses and corruption, go and take a hike. The people of India care two hoots for your complaints.

By yesterday, 6700 players had confirmed their entries to the games making it the biggest Commonwealth Games ever (beating the 5766 athletes and officials who took part in Melbourne four years ago). 71 teams from 54 countries. Millions of viewers across the world watching the games and a giant alien over the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium for the opening ceremony. 5000 years of civilization and the secular ethos of the country will be a part of the ceremony. Enjoy.

Come out and Play.

Corruption, incompetence, unfinished venues, collapsed bridge, floating shit, dengue and now a collapsed false roof.

The fun never stops at CWG.

Guess what’s more funnier than above all mentioned things? Pakistan now wants to send a police official to check if security is all right in India before sending their teams for the games. ROTFLMAO.

Come out and play. Am still rooting for sooper games.

PS: I was thinking of putting up pictures of the venues and detailed info. But looks like the corruption and incompetence of Sure Calamity (Suresh Kalmadi), Lalit Bhanot and gang is much more funnier.

And then, the mother of all comments by none other than Lalit Bhanot

See everyone has a different standard of cleanliness. The rooms of the Games village are clean according to you and me, but they have some other standard of cleanliness.

Lo, kar lo baat

Updated: Btw, can anyone beat the kind of free publicity Kalmadi & gang have bought to the games? No one even bothered about these games a year ago. Today its on the front page of most of the papers. Heck, even the Straits Times of Singapore has a front page heading about the collapsed bridge.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you would have known by now that the capital city of New Delhi will be hosting the 19th Commonwealth Games in another 16 days. The games will start off with an Opening Cermony on the 3rd of October 2010 and run till the 14th of October 2010. The 12 day extravaganza has gone through a lot of controversies about venues not being prepared on time, corruption in the organisation and stuff.

At the end of the day, Kalmadi and his band of merry men still reign. He is determined to put up a good show fully knowing that the whole country is looking to pin him down on a single mistake of his. Whether all the spending has been worth it or if the organising comittee and the people involved in the same have been corrupt is for time to tell and for the investigative departments to find out.

Meanwhile, lets keep our differences aside and put up a positive cheerful face for the world to see. With just 16 days to go for the games to happen, i plan to have a roundup of the venues and the changes the games have brought to New Delhi.

First of all, the games village which had a soft opening yesterday and going by the reivews of the people who have seen it, its mighty impressive. Our crappy media will for sure find some negative points to ham about, but lets look at the brigther side of life.

The gym in the games village

Other countries are taking benefits of all the hardwork done by the Bush government in signing the nuclear deal with India. After US, France, Russia, Kazhakstan, Namibia, its the turn of Mongolia to sign the nuclear deal with India.

More deals with countries would mean that India wouldnt need to depend on a select group of countries for its demand of uranium to power its energy sector.

India on Monday signed a civil nuclear pact with uranium-rich Mongolia that will help it source uranium for its power plants.

According to a joint declaration signed by the two countries, participation of Indian companies through joint ventures and investments in the mining sector in Mongolia is on the cards. “A delegation from India has been invited to Mongolia to discuss the prospects for such a cooperation,” the declaration said.

Mongolia is the sixth country with which India signed the civil nuclear pact after the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers’ Group lifted a 34-year-old ban that had prevented it from trade in the field with the international community. India has earlier signed such agreements with US, France, Russia, Kazakhstan and Namibia.

The agreement — a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of peaceful use of radioactive minerals and nuclear energy — was signed between officials of Department of Atomic energy from both sides in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj at Hyderabad House.

Four other agreements that were signed between the two countries dealt with loan assistance, health and medical science, cultural exchange programme and cooperation statistical matters.

“We have decided to update our bilateral ties to the level of a ‘Comprehensive Partnership’,” Singh said.

India has also agreed to provide Mongolia a soft loan of $ 25 million to help it stabilise its economy in the wake of the financial crisis. In the area of human resource development and capacity building, India will double the number of annual slots for Mongolia under its Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation programme from 60 to 120.

“I have assured the President of our readiness to assist Mongolia in the field of education, particularly in the teaching of English language, and information technology. We will assist Mongolia in the establishment of an Information Technology Centre,” the PM said. While describing the conversations with the Mongolian President as “extremely productive”, the PM said relations with Mongolia are an important pillar of our policy in the Asia-Pacific region.

The declaration also said that development of defence exchanges and cooperation on the basis of the Agreement on Cooperation in Defence Matters signed in 2001 will continue. “The fifth joint military exercise will be held in Mongolia later this month. The third meeting of the Joint Working Group on Defence Cooperation will be held in Ulaanbaatar at a mutually convenient time in 2010,” it said.

South Korea and India signed an ambitious free trade agreement Friday that slashes tariffs, encourages investment and promotes exchange of skills in a bid to double fast-growing commerce between two of Asia’s biggest economies over the next decade.

South Korean Trade Minister Kim Jong-hoon and India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry Anand Sharma signed what the two sides formally called a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, but which in reality is a free trade deal.

Incheon International Airport, Seoul, South Korea

“This is a historic occasion,” Sharma said at a joint press conference with Kim.

Kim said it was South Korea’s first free trade accord with one of the fast-growing BRIC countries — Brazil, Russia, India and China. Sharma said it was India’s first comprehensive trade agreement with a major economy. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached $15.6 billion dollars last year, according to South Korea, and has been steadily growing. In 2002, it amounted to just $2.6 billion.

“We will be able to have access to one-sixth of the global market,” Kim said, adding the agreement “will open a significant opportunity as well as strengthen our relationship with India into the future.”

Sharma said the economic relationship between the two countries “has enormous potential to grow” and could double over the next 10 years.

“That’s what we will be aiming at,” he said. “This is just the beginning.”

The deal calls for abolishing or cutting tariffs for 90 percent of Indian goods in terms of value and 85 percent of South Korean products and increases investment opportunities, Seoul’s Ministry of Strategy and Finance said in a statement. It also allows for greater human resources exchange between the countries, the ministry said, paving the way for Indian computer and software experts as well as English teachers to gain access to the South Korean market.

“India has great competitiveness in terms of its IT professionals and so they will be able to come to Korea to contribute to the growth of the national economy in Korea,” Kim said. “English teachers from India will be able to contribute to the development of education in Korea as well. “

Lotus Temple, New Delhi

Major South Korean corporations such as Samsung Electronics Co., Hyundai Motor Co., LG Electronics Inc. and steelmaker Posco are already active investors in India. Negotiations for the deal began in February 2006.

Though the agreement has been signed, several steps remain on the South Korean side for it to take effect, such as ratification by the National Assembly, according to the ministry. India, however, has completed all necessary procedures for the deal to take effect, the ministry said. The latest deal highlights South Korea’s national strategy of aggressively pursuing free trade agreements.

Seoul signed a free trade deal with the United States in 2007, though it has yet to be ratified by legislatures in both countries amid political sensitivities and suspicions regarding free trade among some lawmakers. Seoul also has a free trade agreement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and said last month it has concluded negotiations with the European Union. South Korea’s biggest trading partners include China, the EU, the U.S., ASEAN and Japan.

First a trip to smelly and dirty Chennai, then a trip to equally smelly and extremely dirty pilgrim town called Velankanni (with the famous shrine of Mary) and finally to an extremely clean, cold and windy Hyderabad.

Chennai was sweltering hot, i sweated buckets. Coupled with that the scarcity of water and a city that is used by its citizens as a garbage dump. You wonder where the municipal workers of the city are? If at all they are doing the work. Whether you are the middle of the city or at the outskirts, one thing that defines Chennai is the consistent crappy smell in the air. The air stinks in Chennai and uniformly so. Dont know why and how. This is in addition to the dirt and filth all around. Wonder which moron decided to name it a metro.

Velankanni was equally dirty. For a piligrim town with such a potential for tourism, there are hardly any good lodge/hotels. The only good ones are the dorms run by the church, but they too offer you rooms for the next day only. And if you are the ones (like me) who just drop into the town with no reservations, hoping to stay at some hotel, be disappointed with the kinds of rooms you get there. As for the restaurants, stay away if you dont want to come down with some extreme case of food poisoning or diarrhea.

If you have any plans of going to Velankanni, stay at Nagapattinam, a town near Velankanni. Take a bus in the morning to Velankanni, see around and come back to Nagapattinam. This was advised by my friends after i did my trip much to my exasperation.

Took a train from Chennai to Hyderabad. Was travelling by the Indian Railways after more than 11 years and loved the experience. Reached Hyderabad early morning around 6am on the 14th (our 1st wedding anniversary). Was amazed at how clean the city of Hyderabad was at 6 in the morning. Either the roads were swept clean or at some places the cleaners were hard at work. Kudos to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the people who work for them for keeping the city reasonably clean.

It was drizzling all through and there was a nice cool breeze. Loved it. Since we were tired, we preferred to rest. There was not much celebration for the anniversary as all plans were for wifey’s birthday which was 2 days later on the 16th. Had a get together at home for friends and family for wifey’s birthday.

Later on in the week, went to the new mall in town, GVK-1. Good place to hang out, but there was something lacking in the place. I prefer Hyderabad Central or City Center. Also the mall is pretty new and the shops are only coming up. Maybe it will be good once it fills up.

Saw the movie New York. Not bad i thought. Better than the crap that Yash Raj is famous for churning out. Saw the movie at the new INOX multiplex at GVK-1. The seating is good and so is the sound system.

Travelled back to Singapore via Chennai again. From the superb airport of Hyderabad to a garbage can called Chennai Airport is a perfect example of what the private sector can do to our economy while at the same time, the Chennai airport run by the inefficient babus of Airports Authority of India have really screwed it up.

There were no seats at the international departure. They simply disappeared. For someone who’se flight is yet to start check-in, they simply have to stand there waiting for the counters to open. Can you believe that? What about the elderly and the people who need to rest? Have the airport authorities ever thought about their comfort?

And the cafe’s selling stuff in Chennai airport are nothing but daylight robbery. Tea is sold for Rs 30. A samosa / aloo bonda costs Rs 60. Whereas you get a good Cafe Coffee Day coffee at the Hyderabad airport for just Rs 15.

I can go on and on about the pathetic situation at Chennai airport, but its a waste of time. Its a perfect example of why the airport needs to be handed over to a private player so that they can do a better job of the same. Anyone with doubts can look at Hyderabad, Bangalore, Delhi and Bombay airports and compare them to the ones run by AAI. There is simply no comparison.

Back at office and a mountain of work stares me in the face. Time to get going.

Delhi boy Yuki Bhambri on Saturday created history by becoming the first Indian to win the junior Australian Open title, beating Alexandros-Ferdinandos Georgoudas of Germany 6-3, 6-1 in the final.

Yuki follows in the footsteps of Indian tennis greats Ramanathan Krishnan, Ramesh Krishnan and Leander Paes to win a junior Grand Slam.

Ramanathan Krishnan won the Wimbledon junior title in 1954, the first Asian player to achieve the feat. His son Ramesh carried on the legacy to win the junior titles at French Open and Wimbledon in 1979. Paes was the last Indian to win a junior Grand Slam when he won the Wimbledon Boy’s title in 1990 and the US Open in 1991 as a 17-year-old.

Sixteen-year-old Yuki came into the Australian Open as the top seed, having reached the semi-final here last year. Yuki has been performing exceptionally in the international circuit. His best show so far has been the title win at the Orange Bowl in Key Biscayne in the US, considered to be the fifth Grand Slam, besides the Osaka Mayor’s Cup in October. It catapulted him to No. 2 in World junior rankings.

However, Yuki’s doubles campaign ended in semi-final after he and his Taipei partner Liang Chi-Huang lost 3-6, 1-6 to Russia’s Mikhal Biryukov and Japanese Yasutaka Uchiyama on Friday.

Yuki honed his skills at the famous Nick Bolletieri Tennis Academy in the USA. He is coached by Aditya Sachdeva, who accompanied him to Melbourne.

With Mahesh Bhupati in both the mixed doubles (with Sania Mirza) and in the men’s doubles finals, its some exciting days for Indian tennis.
