How Busy Professionals Can Reduce Their Distress and Meet Their Goals

You wouldn’t be in business if you believed what you did or made didn’t have some sort of value for somebody else. Also, there would be no point in putting yourself through the stress you feel every day. There are too many in business who are just skating by, making no effort and still managing to collect a check. However, that’s not you. Every day, you are working hard to innovate, meet deadlines, and ensure your customers are satisfied, all while dealing with the other day-to-day activities of running a business. Plus, you have professional and personal goals: getting new clients each month, continuing your education, and making sure your employees think your business is the best place to work.

But along with all of that comes stress

Truth be told, it’s not stress itself that’s your enemy. It’s distress, the negative form of stress that can cause anxiety and decrease our performance ability. So, when we complain of feeling stressed out, we’re actually feeling distress. Stress itself can be a positive thing since it can be a motivator. Writing at HuffPost, Dr. John Whyte claims that stress can sharpen your memory, boost your immune system, and help your mental toughness. But stress can easily become distress if we let it go on too long.

To prevent that so you can accomplish your personal and business goals, focus on these three areas of your professional and personal life.

Relax 

In the go-go world of business, it seems impossible to simply relax. However, it is essential for you to do it to minimize the distress you might feel. To help you alleviate symptoms of anxiety and stress, it’s a good idea to practice self-care. It could be as simple as shutting the office door and spending five minutes talking on the phone with a family member or friend (even if it’s just to catch up), taking a break to enjoy a healthy lunch or dinner, or spending 10 minutes in a deep meditative state. The point is to shut out any outside noise or other stimuli and spend some time putting yourself in a calm state to reduce your distress.

Get Your Finances in Order 

If there’s one thing that can cause lots of distress, it’s money. Your business needs it, and you need it to maintain your livelihood.  According to Dennis Thompson of CBS News, a 2015 poll from the American Psychological Association showed that nearly three out of four adults felt stressed about money some of the time. In order for you to feel less stress about money, you must stick to a budget and keep all your financial records organized. Also, keep tabs on your credit by regularly checking your credit report and making payments on all loans and credit cards on time. Without a doubt, you will need additional capital at some point, so having a good business credit score will make that application process smoother and lessen the distress you feel every day.

Get Plenty of Sleep at Night 

How can a good night’s sleep affect your personal and business goals? Simple: It can make you feel refreshed and rested and better focused. It also improves your memory, mental outlook, and your individual productivity. When’s the last time you felt productive after only five hours of sleep? It’s easy to get, too. Just remember to make your bedroom comfortable for sleep, shut off all laptops and phones and tablets (the blue light from them is found to suppress melatonin levels and upsets your circadian rhythm), and avoid caffeine at least six hours before your bedtime.

We all live with stress in our lives, but it’s how we handle distress that counts the most. As a business professional, you can keep the normal stress of daily work from becoming distress as long as you keep tabs on your money, learn how to relax by practicing good self-care, and get a good night’s sleep. And keeping distress at bay is one way you can achieve whatever goals you’ve set for yourself.
